Description
There has been public outcry regarding the lack of pain management for intrauterine device (IUD) insertion, driven by social media. In addition, the CDC recently released recommendations for patient counseling regarding pain management for IUD insertion. Our session will share how a learning collaborative was able to design a multisite educational and clinical quality improvement (QI) project to effectively address this issue of IUD insertion pain control. The educational intervention aimed to improve clinicians’ knowledge of and comfort implementing evidence-based pain control modalities for intrauterine procedures. The clinical QI project aimed to streamline workflows and provider counseling for IUD insertion pain control. The educational intervention shared evidence for anxiolytics, analgesics, paracervical blocks, and holistic pain control options. The clinical intervention established workflows for IUD pain control counseling and use of periprocedural lidocaine. Data was collected regarding provider knowledge and attitudes as well as periprocedural pain counseling and lidocaine use pre- and post-intervention. Our data show that this type of collaborative project can effectively change clinician knowledge, attitudes, and practice. This session will discuss the existing literature for intrauterine periprocedural pain management options and equip participants with tools to carry out educational and clinical QI interventions at their home institutions.Period | 6 May 2025 |
