Dr. Alan Liu is the Director of the Virtual Medical Environments Laboratory at the Val G. Hemming Simulation Center (SimCen) of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Dr. Liu drives the strategic development of advanced medical simulation technologies. His work focuses on creating sophisticated computer-based training systems, a pursuit that led him to become the principal developer of the world's first computer-based simulators for procedures like pericardiocentesis and diagnostic peritoneal lavage. These innovations have had a transformative impact on trauma education, notably facilitating the nation's first non-animal, non-cadaver Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses.
Currently, Dr. Liu's research is centered on expanding immersive training capabilities through the Wide Area Virtual Environment (WAVE), a 10,000 square-foot total immersion theater. The WAVE is designed to provide unprecedented realism for mass casualty and medical team training in military and homeland defense contexts.
