Captain Shwayhat was raised in Santa Rosa, California and
holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry from the
University of California at Davis, Master’s Degree in Public
Health/Epidemiology from San Diego State University,
Master’s in Health Care Administration and Doctorate in
Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University.
Captain Shwayhat is trained and board certified in internal
medicine, aerospace medicine, and endocrinology. He was
selected from his residency class as Chief Medical Resident at
the Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) and later
served as Associate Program Director, Chief of Endocrinology,
and Chief of Medicine. He holds warfare qualifications as a
Naval Flight Surgeon, Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer, and Fleet Marine
Force Medical Department Officer.
Captain Shwayhat is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the
American College of Endocrinology and has authored numerous peer reviewed journal
articles and textbook chapters. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the
Uniformed Services University School of Medicine and has received multiple teaching
and leadership awards at every level of graduate medical education as well as physician
organizations. He was previously deployed in the Western Pacific as a Flight Surgeon
with the 11
th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard USS PELELIU and as Deputy Director of
Medical Services aboard USNS COMFORT in its initial Partnership for the Americas
Deployment. He served as Carrier Strike Group ONE Surgeon and Senior Medical
Officer aboard USS CARL VINSON and led the Carrier Task Force’s medical response
in the early aftermath of disaster relief operations in Haiti in 2010. His military awards
include the Legion of Merit (two awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards),
Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Army Commendation
Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal and
various other unit and service awards.
Captain Shwayhat retired as Assistant Chief of Staff to the Commander, Naval Air
Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. He resides in San Diego with his two children Ellen and Joey.
