Biography

Lt Col Andrew S. Thagard, MD, USAF, MC currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Uniformed Services University’s Department of Gynecologic Surgery & Obstetrics (GSO). Dual boarded in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Dr. Thagard is a practicing perinatologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he also serves as faculty in the Gynecologic Surgery & Obstetrics residency program.

He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-professional Studies, and earned his medical doctorate at the University of Florida. Dr. Thagard completed his residency training at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and served as an attending OB/GYN there for a year prior to matriculating to fellowship training at Madigan Army Medical Center. He has served as Division Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, chairman of the Armed Forces Maternal-Fetal Medicine Network, and a district officer in the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG). Prior to assuming the role of GSO Department Chair, he was the Associate Dean for Regional Education based at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, providing student and faculty support at Military Treatment Facilities throughout the southeast.

Dr. Thagard currently serves on ACOG’s Committee on Obstetric Practice where he assists in developing evidence-based guidelines for the organization’s 60,000 members. He is the author of 25 peer-reviewed publications, receipt of over $350,000 in grant funding, and the co-holder of one patent.
