Biography

Dr. Anita Samuel is an online educator and researcher. Her research straddles the domains of adult learning, online learning, and health education. She has published peer-reviewed journal articles in high-impact HPE journals, including Academic Medicine and Clinical Teacher. Her article in Clinical Teacher on Creating supportive learning environments: The role of the medical educator was recognized as a ‘must read’ for medical educators by the Mayo Clinic Faculty Development team.

Her empirical research into online learning has produced two new conceptualizations of online teaching and interaction. These models have been published in leading distance education journals such as the American Journal of Distance Education and The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning. As an educator, she has developed an online course design review rubric specifically for the CHPE program to ensure quality educational experiences for online learners. She has designed and implemented orientation programs for students and faculty and works on constantly updating and enhancing educational technologies.

Her practice in online education is informed by critical digital pedagogy and she explores issues of accessibility and equity in online learning spaces. She also studies equity in the sphere of medical education leadership and has published studies on the leadership parity index in medical school leadership. She has given key note presentations and invited presentations on equity in leadership and teaching with technology.

As an adult educator in medical education, she has researched emerging trends in continuing professional development in the health professions. Her research explores CPD models that are effective in learning transfer. She also studies how CPD is delivered through online platforms and is researching effective online learning CPD models.

In addition to her research, Dr. Samuel serves the national and international online learning and adult education and medical education communities. She is the Associate Editor of the Online Journal of Workforce and Employee Development and serves on the editorial board of eLearn Magazine, a double-blind peer-reviewed publication and MedEdPublish. She also regularly reviews for various academic journals including Academic Medicine, Clinical Teacher, Military Medicine, Adult Learning, MedEdPublish, among others.

She is on the board of the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education and serves as the Communications Chair. She is also on the board of the Commission for International Adult Education and the Commission for Workplace Professional Development.
