COVID-19, emerging infectious diseases, travel/tropical medicine, and medical education
Lt Col (Dr) David Lindholm is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Associate Dean for Regional Education, San Antonio Region, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
He graduated with highest honors from Cedarville University (Ohio) with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and minor in Bible, and he commissioned into the US Air Force through the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 2007. In 2011, he earned his Doctor of Medicine from USUHS, where he was the valedictorian and elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed both his residency in internal medicine (2014) and fellowship in infectious disease (2016) at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC), achieving board certification in both specialties. He then completed a two-year tour at the Wright-Patterson Medical Center in Dayton, OH, where he served as chief of the infectious disease element, founding chair of the hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship program, chair of the infection prevention and control function, and faculty for the Wright State University Internal Medicine Residency. He returned to San Antonio in August 2018 to serve as the site director for the USUHS Department of Medicine’s core clerkship rotation at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), a role in which he continues to serve. From 2021-2023, he was also the medical director of BAMC’s antimicrobial stewardship program, an Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence. He was appointed to the Dean’s Staff in 2023.
Additionally, he serves as core faculty for the SAUSHEC Infectious Disease Fellowship Program and Internal Medicine Residency. He conducts faculty development across the Military Health System through USU’s Faculty Development Outreach and Certification for the Uniformed Services (FOCUS) program. He has been a recurring lecturer for the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine’s Global Medicine Symposium, the USUHS Military Tropical Medicine Course, and various Defense Institute for Medical Operations courses. He has received teaching awards from USUHS, University of Texas Health San Antonio, and Wright-Patterson Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and IDSA and a member of the IDSA’s Medical Education Community of Practice. He was previously the president of the Armed Forces Infectious Diseases Society.
Dr Lindholm is the principal investigator of the Vaccine Effectiveness and Immune Response of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccines in Active Military Personnel (VIRAMP) study and site principal investigator for the EPICC (Epidemiology, Immunology and Clinical Characteristics of Emerging Infectious Diseases with Pandemic Potential) natural history study of COVID-19. He also served as site principal investigator for the four iterations of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease-sponsored Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial. He has over 35 publications, including contributions to works in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Annals of Internal Medicine, Cell Host & Microbe, and Science Translational Medicine. His research interests include COVID-19, emerging infectious diseases, travel/tropical medicine, and medical education.
