Biography

Dr. Smalley is a board-certified pediatrician and adolescent medicine provider and has been working in adolescent and young adult health for 16 years. After eight years serving as the medical director and flight commander for the Air Force's Transgender Health Medical Evaluation unit in San Antonio, he most recently took on a role as the Medical Director for Cadet Medicine at the United States Air Force Academy. In this role, Dr. Smalley supervises primary & specialty care services provided to 4300 patients in the USAFA cadet wing and engages with cadet student leadership for health education outreach development and delivery, as well as overseeing quality improvement and research efforts relevant to college and  military health.  

Lt Col Smalley currently holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Pediatrics with Uniformed Services University and is a passionate educator.  He served as the associate program director for DOD's only Adolescent medicine fellowship in San Antonio and remains engaged in mentorship and research with fellows to this day. He's routinely teaches workshops at national conferences including the Society of Adolescent Health & Medicine and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.  Most recently his health education initiatives at USAFA were accepted for presentation at the American College Health Association national conference.

Dr. Smalley is also the AF/SG Adolescent medicine consultant and routinely advises Air Force and Defense Health Agency leadership on concerns relevant to the teen and young adult population. Dr. Smalley's research and clinical interests include health education, virtual health, LGBTQ+ health, sexual assault care, and women's health.
