Dr. Luke Surry is a dedicated and accomplished internal medicine physician with a passion for medical education. He is currently the Director of Integrated Clinical Skills at the Uniformed Services University (USU) of the Health Sciences and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force.
Dr. Surry is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), a member of Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM), and AMSUS – Society of Federal Health Professionals. He also serves as a member of the Veterans Affairs (VA) / Department of Defense (DoD) Evidence Based Practice Working Group that leads the strategic planning and oversight of VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines. He earned a Master’s in Health Professions Education (2017) and a Certificate in Physician Leadership from the ACP / American Association of Physician Leadership (AAPL) (2021).
Dr. Surry is board-certified in internal medicine and has extensive clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with expertise in hospital medicine, primary care, and medical acupuncture. His clinical practice is grounded in a patient-centered approach, emphasizing empathy, clear communication, and shared decision-making to build strong patient relationships and provide high-quality care.
He is committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians. He has held various academic leadership roles, including Chief Resident, Assistant Program Director for Research, and Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. In addition to his role as director of the preclerkship clinical skills program, he currently serves as a faculty advisor for multiple student interest groups and an academic coach. Additional work includes involvement in curricular integration, developing robust longitudinal programs of assessment, establishing novel assessment frameworks for professional behaviors, and building systems to inform competency and entrustment decisions.
Dr. Surry's scholarship focuses on competency-based medical education, clinical reasoning, assessment and feedback. He has engaged in guest-editorial and peer-review activities. He published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented at national and international conferences.
