Biography

COL Mitchell T. Hamele was born and raised in the Madison, Wisconsin area. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Microbiology and Immunology. In 2002 he was commissioned in the Army Reserve Corps as a 2LT upon acceptance to the Edward Herbert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 2006 and was recommissioned as a Captain in the Medical Corps.

Following completion of medical school COL Hamele completed his Pediatric residency at Madigan Army Medical Center. After graduation he was stationed as the Chief of Pediatrics at United State Army Health Center-Vicenza. He completed his specialty training in Pediatric Critical Care through the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT in 2015. COL Hamele is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care. COL Hamele assumed duties as Director-Academics, Readiness and Training at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) on 1 January 2024.

COL Hamele has served in various clinical and leadership positions to include: Chief, Department of Pediatrics, USAHC-Vicenza; Director of CME, Victory Base Complex, Baghdad, Iraq; Chief, Pediatric Critical Care and Sedation, TAMC; Medical Student Pediatric Clerkship Site Director, TAMC: PALS Program Director, TAMC; Associate Pediatric Residency Program Director, TAMC; Director Inpatient Pediatrics TAMC; Medical Director of the Ruth Andrews Medical Simulation Center, TAMC; Consultant to the Advanced Virtual Support to Operational Forces service; Deputy Chief, Department of Pediatrics, TAMC. COL Hamele deployed with TF44 med, 28th CSH to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

COL Hamele’s military awards and decorations include Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 5 oak leaf clusters, the Armed Forces Service Medal, and the Iraqi Campaign Medal with two campaign stars. COL Hamele is a recipient of the Army’s “A” Designator and a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3). COL Hamele is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics. COL holds an appointment as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences as well as an appointment as Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah. COL Hamele has given academic presentations at regional, national, and international meetings and is credited with over 18 peer reviewed publications and 5 chapters or invited academic contributions. His particular research interests are Pediatric Trauma Care and Mass Critical Care. COL Hamele enjoys the loving support of his wife, Sara Hamele, and 3 daughters; Isabelle, Madelyn, and Sydney.
