Biography
Dr. Ryan P. Flanagan is a Pediatric and Fetal Cardiologist and a Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps with over 20 years of clinical, academic, and military leadership experience. He currently serves as the Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the largest Department of Defense (DOD) medical center outside the United States.
Dr. Flanagan’s clinical expertise is centered on non-invasive congenital cardiac imaging, including transthoracic and fetal echocardiography. Throughout his career, he has integrated "hub-and-spoke" telemedicine and regional outreach. His commitment to a "Patient First" philosophy was solidified during his service as the Senior Pediatrician at Fort McCoy during Operation Allies Welcome, where he helped managed the medical needs of over 12,500 Afghan refugees as well as during a humanitarian mission to nation of Palau.
A dedicated clinician-educator, Dr. Flanagan holds the rank of Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University. He has held multiple high-level academic roles, including Tripler AMC Pediatric Residency Program Director and Director of Continuing Medical Education (CME) at Womack AMC. His excellence in teaching has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Teacher of the Year award at the University of Pittsburgh and the Tripler AMC Dr. Michael K. Yancey Annual Outstanding Staff Teacher Award.
In addition to his clinical and educational roles, He served as the DOD Lead Investigator for the Youth Echo Screening for Cardiac Complications of COVID (YES-3C) study and has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on topics ranging from pediatric heart transplantation to cardiac physiology.
Dr. Flanagan earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University and completed his Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Cardiology.
