Biography

Dr. Durning is a professor of health professions education, medicine, and pathology at the Uniformed Services University (USU). He is the inaugural chair of the Department of Health Professions Education and the founding Director of the Center for Health Professions Education. He received his MD degree from the University of Pittsburgh and practices general internal medicine. His PhD, earned from Maastricht University, addressed the influence of contextual factors on clinical reasoning. As an educator, he mentors graduate students and faculty, teaches in the HPE program, and also directs a second-year medical school course on clinical reasoning. Dr. Durning holds appointments in the departments of medicine and pathology.

Dr. Durning has published over 500 peer reviewed manuscripts and has won over 10 million dollars in educational grant funding. He has written multiple books and served on numerous leadership positions with the AAMC, NBME, AMEE, ABIM, and other organizations.
