Biography

CAPT Tamara Worlton graduated from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in 2003 and her General Surgery residency at National Naval Medical Center in 2008. She went on to complete a fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio 2010. She is currently the Director of the Division of Global Surgery at USU and Director of Surgical Operations at the Center for Global Health Engagement. CAPT Worlton served as ship’s surgeon on an aircraft carrier, deployed to Afghanistan, Djibouti and served on both US Navy hospital ships. She is recognized as a Navy expert in surgical Global Health Engagement (GHE) and earned the additional military qualification in GHE as well as a Graduate Certificate in Global Health and Global Health Engagement from USU. She has worked extensively in civilian academic global surgery and within DoD GHE for surgery and trauma care which culminated being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Sri Lanka to study trauma systems. CAPT Worlton currently serves as co-chair for the Education Committee in American College of Surgeons HOPE (Health Outreach Program for Equity in Global Surgery) and was recently selected as a 2024-2026 Fulbright Alumni Ambassador. Her research has led to a collaboration with Harvard Medical School's Program for Global Surgery and Social Change and has mentored 3 military fellows of this prestigous program. This collaboration is investigating the integration of military and civilian trauma systems as a potential method to address the disproportionate burden of trauma in low-and-middle income countries.
