Biography

Thomas R. Burklow, MD, FAAP, FACC, COL (ret), is Director of the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he holds the title of Senior Research Physician (academic equivalent of full Professor) with a joint appointment in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Burklow earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, and completed residency training in pediatrics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, followed by fellowship training in pediatric cardiology at Children’s National Medical Center. His military recognitions include the Order of Military Medical Merit, the Army Surgeon General’s “A” Proficiency Designator, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, and the Bronze Star Medal. He is a Distinguished Alumnus of Washington University School of Medicine and a recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics Uniformed Services Section Outstanding Service Award. His career has focused on clinician-educator leadership, graduate and undergraduate medical education, healthcare simulation, and pediatric cardiovascular disease, with a clinical and research emphasis on cardiac disease in children with rare inherited disorders, and the application of translational simulation to improve patient care and clinical systems.
