Abstract

(from the chapter) As with our previous chapter, we continue to believe that marked technological advances in the biological and behavioral sciences, substantial expansion of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary consideration of health issues, and incorporation of multilevel analyses in behavior and health work together to sustain a renewed mind-body monism. Advances in behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, genetics, molecular biology, and behavioral science all point to the effects of the mind on the body and the body on the mind. In the context of the present chapter and the present volume, biological variables are part of the biopsychological and environmental milieu that affects adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyles and compliance and adherence to healthful behaviors and treatments.
