Abstract

In this chapter we will introduce the reader to triage from a historical perspective as well as how it is applied on the modern battlefield. We will also introduce the concepts of damage control resuscitation, damage control surgery, and massive transfusion for initial management of combat casualties. Understanding the principles that guide triage and damage control described in this chapter will help physicians rapidly implement current guidelines to effectively treat even the most severely injured of casualties in austere environments.
