Abstract
To determine the patient's benefit from intravenous therapy with infusion pumps, two types of volumetric (ml/hr) intravenous infusion pumps were evaluated in relation to patient complications, cost, and nursing time required for maintaining an intravenous infusion. Based on the complications associated with the infusion devices evaluated, our study has found that the optimal infusion pump may generate a pressure range between 4 and 10 psi. This pressure range may promote the maintenance of intravenous fluid flow, prevent hazards, and minimize cost to the patient. Further research should be conducted to evaluate the optimal pressure infusion device and other infusion devices in relation to patient benefit.
