Abstract
A new era of individualized care, driven by new diagnostics and therapeutic strategies, is rapidly emerging. This era will provide unprecedented opportunities in research focused on targeted prevention and treatment strategies. Research strategies using individual variability in each person’s genes, environment, and lifestyle are needed to take advantage of these opportunities. Clinician-scientists will need training to learn about these approaches to precision health, expand their skills, and develop new approaches. Several research and training opportunities include the 2following: the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Precision Medicine Initiative, the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) 1-week intensive boot camps, massive open online courses, workshops provided by professional societies, and resources provided by NIH initiatives and funded programs (such as Big Data to Knowledge [BD2K] and Clinical and Translational Science Awards [CTSA]). Within this chapter, we will discuss how advances in the omics sciences, biotechnology, and data science will enable clinician-scientists to engage with patients and implement timely and effective interventions to improve patient outcomes.
