Abstract

Coverage of the foot and ankle are a challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. The unique properties of the bone and soft tissue make the functional restoration of the foot and ankle crucial to allow patients to ambulate with a normal gait. Surgeons treating these complex foot and ankle wounds should be knowledgeable of the options for soft tissue reconstruction. Microvascular perforator flaps have evolved as a very powerful tool for reliable and durable soft tissue reconstruction of the foot and ankle. They can be technically demanding, but their distinct advantages make them ideal for use in this region.
