Lessons from COVID and looking ahead at the medical education landscape

Abstract

In 2022, post-COVID shutdowns, education is returning to a more traditional face-to-face format. This is an appropriate time to examine lessons learned from teaching during COVID and the effects on how educators teach. A qualitative study with medical school faculty explored how they made the shift to online teaching during COVID and how they plan to teach moving forward. The findings from this study show that there is more adoption of educational technologies and online learning among medical school faculty. This is accompanied by a continued affirmation of the need for in-person educational experiences. The road ahead for medical education seems to be leading to blended teaching formats, and institutions should have structures to support this move.
