Abstract

The management of bronchiectasis requires the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of underlying etiology in addition to treatment of acute exacerbations and maintenance therapy.29 Prevention, with regular use of chest physiotherapy and treatment of infective exacerbations with appropriate antibiotics, remains the mainstay of therapy. Unfortunately, bronchiectasis is still an understudied disease and few quality randomized controlled trials exist. Consequently, management guidelines are based on limited data and expert opinion with extrapolation from other respiratory diseases (ie, CF, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma). Larger study populations and longer clinical trials, as well as new clinical endpoints, will be required to provide data to support the role of new and existing treatments.30.
