Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (IPD) has a prevalence of about 0.3 % in the general population with prevalence increasing to 5 % by age 85. The disease is fairly rare less than 50 years of age. Smoking appears to be a protective factor, with less smokers progressing to IPD .
