Abstract
Sleep deprivation (acute or chronic) is associated with decrements in and impairment of a variety of neurocognitive abilities. The neurophysiology underlying the effects of sleep loss informs our understanding of potential behavioral consequences and tasks to appropriately measure these deficits. A variety of neurocognitive tests are used in the laboratory and are commonly classified as 'executive' or 'nonexecutive' functioning tasks based on their complexity. Novelty, task demand, number of administrations, and individual difference factors such as age are important factors influencing performance on neurocognitive tests.
