Abstract

The purpose of this review is to consider the neuropathology of disorders that are characterized by progressive dementia. As the list of medical and neurologic conditions in which dementia is a prominent clinical feature is exceedingly long, this discussion will be limited to describing the pathology of those disorders that are responsible for the vast majority of cases of dementia. By far, the most important entity to be considered is Alzheimer's disease, or senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (AD/SDAT).
