Abstract

Nicotine is the primary drug of addiction in tobacco. Its physical chemistry allows ready distribution throughout the body. It acts throughout the nervous system to exert reinforcing effects, including effects on behavior, cognition, and motivation. Nicotine is mostly commonly self-administered from tobacco products. Nicotine-containing medications are available as adjunctive therapies to behavioral and cognitive strategies to help people abstain from tobacco use. Nicotine and nicotine agonists may be useful to treat a variety of health problems.
