Abstract

In the US, approximately 80% of African American women and 70% of white women will develop uterine fibroids by age 50. Based on the common racial predisposition for obesity and fibroids, significant effort has been directed to determine causality. The purpose of this chapter is to review the epidemiological and molecular studies that have found an association between obesity, inflammation and the development of uterine fibroids. Although this field is still emerging, results from studies in this area may lead to new therapies for fibroids directed at mediators of inflammation.
