N2 - We describe the use of optical fibers for monitoring the electrical activity of individual cells in vitro. Visible laser radiation is directed down the fiber and excites fluorescence of a voltage sensitive dye incorporated into the cell membrane. The fluorescence returns along the same fiber into the detection system.
