Optical recording of the electrical activity of cells with multi-mode and single-mode optical fibers

Abstract

We describe the use of optical fibers for monitoring the electrical activity of individual cells in vitro. Visible laser radiation is directed down the fiber and excites fluorescence of a voltage sensitive dye incorporated into the cell membrane. The fluorescence returns along the same fiber into the detection system.
