Abstract
Pubertal changes in girls result directly or indirectly from maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Physical changes occur in an orderly sequence during a definite time frame in puberty. Abnormalities of pubertal development fall into four major categories: (1) precocious puberty; (2) delayed (or interrupted) puberty; (3) asynchronous pubertal development; and (4) heterosexual pubertal development (the most common of which is polycystic ovary syndrome). Diagnostic testing and treatment are discussed.
