Abstract

The biopsychosocial underpinnings of BED are multi-factorial and span across development. It is crucial to understand factors that promote the onset and exacerbation of loss of control (LOC) eating, a childhood precursor to BED. The purpose of this chapter, therefore, is to review existing theories and empirical evidence on the biological, psychological, social, and environmental influences that confer vulnerability for the initiation and persistence of LOC eating and BED. Finally, future directions are discussed for advancing research on the causes of BED.
