Abstract
The proliferation of computerized clinical and management information systems in health care has led to a rekindling of concerns related to protecting the privacy and ensuring confidentially of health data. This article presents a discussion of ethical concepts and explores the issues related to guaranteeing the security of computerized patient information systems. The legislative guidelines that translate into nursing responsibilities are discussed. Strategies for nursing to use in safeguarding the privacy of computerized data are also proposed.
