Abstract
Integrative medicine IM is the active patient-centered practice of including the best evidence based care and the variety of compatible complementary and alternative (CAM) treatments that are expected to achieve the fullest compliance, maximal heath and participative function of each patient. Other terms for integrative medicine include holistic, functional, and blended. Complementary and Alternative Medicine CAM is the popular phrase used for medical products and practices that have not been a part of standard medical care. IM is defined as "healing-oriented wholistic medicine that reemphasizes the relationship between patient and physician and integrates the best of complementary and alternative medicine with the best of conventional medicine.” Integrative medicine focuses on the preventive maintenance of health by paying attention to all relative components of lifestyle, including diet, exercise, stress management, and emotional well-being. Spirituality is an important aspect of every person and requires medical understanding and a spiritual assessment. Addressing patients’ beliefs throughout heath care achieves better outcomes. Alternative medicine includes practices that have not been part of mainstream or standard allopathic medical care. CAM works in an active partnership with the patient to address pathophysiology as well as symptoms with sensitivity to patient culture and preference. Contemporary clinicians actively seek constant development of practice by updating to the most effective evidence based treatment by exploring conventional medical literature as well as emerging evidence for methods yet to be fully recognized. Integrative medical care requires clear understanding of the compatibilites of treatments as well as the synergisms.
