note = "Funding Information: Guatemala, one of the countries included in our network, has experienced a case of research misconduct so severe that it led in 2011 to the president of the United States publicly apologising to the president of Guatemala . Researchers from the United States, funded by the National Institutes of Health, between 1946 and 1948 without informed consent, infected around 1,500 soldiers, prostitutes, prisoners, and patients with mental health problems with syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases. Some 83 people died directly from the experiments. ",
