Abstract
More than 1000 years ago, Native Americans were using tobacco, and they were probably aware of its appetite-suppressing and energy-instilling actions.1 Although scientific papers reporting that the use of tobacco lowered body weight began to appear more than 100 years ago,2 detailed study of the relation between cigarette smoking and body weight began only 10 years ago.2 3 4 5 There are several reasons for renewed attention to this well-known phenomenon.
