Abstract

For centuries the only tool available to physicians was their relationship with their patients. We now know much more about the relationship and its central importance in sustaining medical care, adherence to treatments and, very importantly, its role in psychotherapy. Understanding the components of the doctorpatient relationship and its role in medical care and psychotherapeutic treatment can aid in delivery of a patient-centered care that is empathic and enhances treatment.
