Abstract
As with previous large-scale military conflicts, the recent campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have led to advances in medical science. The treatment of complex injury patterns encountered in these wars, arguably the most severe yet survivable injuries ever sustained in combat, coupled with seemingly fictional technology has resulted in what many may deem a medical marvel. These wars will likely be characteristic of future military conflicts in terms of scope, tactics, strategies, and casualties, and the difficulty in treating these complex injury patterns will no doubt pressure the medical community to continue to make advances in treatment options.
