Abstract

This chapter explores the two primary pathways for individuals aspiring to become military surgeons: Uniformed Services University (USU) and the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). USU offers a fully immersive experience with a military unique curriculum, while HPSP provides a civilian medical education with military benefits. USU graduates have a higher likelihood of long-term military service and often hold leadership positions within the Military Health System. Surgical faculty have opportunities for teaching, coaching, research, faculty development, certificate, degree programs, and academic promotion at USU. Both programs provide unique opportunities for medical education and military service as a surgeon.
