Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) bleeding refers to bleeding from sites in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum proximal to the ligament of Treitz. Nearly 80% of patients visiting emergency departments for UGI bleeding are admitted to the hospital, resulting in over 300,000 admissions annually with a mortality of 3.5%-10%. The readers of this chapter will be given a practical knowledge of the causes of UGI bleeding, methods for risk stratification, and techniques for management and treatment.
